KWIC: Filters

LancsBox X’s XLM functionality offers powerful sorting and filtering capabilities. Filters can be applied to linguistic and metalinguistic data. In order to apply a filter to results, hover the mouse over any column heading. Click on the filter icon that appears to select a filter. Once a filter is applied, the filter icon will turn blue and remain visible in the filtered column (). In order to remove a filter, click this button again and select ‘Delete’ from the drop menu.

Filtering linguistic data:

Linguistic data can be filtered in the node, left context, and right context columns. Users can add a filter using simple searches, smart searches, and Corpus Query Language (CQL).  When filtering the node column, users can choose whether the filtered results include all occurrences which include the search term, or only occurrences which match the search term exactly.

When filtering linguistic data in the left or right context columns, users are able to select which words to include or exclude from the search criteria. By default, all of the words included in the collocation window are selected.

Filtering metalinguistic data:

Metalinguistic data can be filtered according to three data types: 1) categories, 2) numbers and 3) dates.

1) Categories

When the metalinguistic data is sorted by category, the filter tool will provide users with a menu allowing them to select which categories to include in the results. Select required categories by ticking the check box next to each category. Adding a search term at the top of this menu will allow users to find and select search categories more easily. Clicking the tick icon to the right of the search box () will select all highlighted categories, and selecting the empty tick box () will deselect all highlighted categories.

2) Numbers

If the metalinguistic data is numerical, the range of numbers can be selected with the filter tool. Users can either manually select minimum and maximum values, or use the slider on the filter menu.

3) Dates

If the metalinguistic data is in date format, a third type of filter option will be displayed. Users can specify a start and end date. Dates that do not follow a valid YYYY-MM-DD pattern are displayed as categories which can be manually selected.
